Electronic filing mandate

Preparers filing more than 100 Rhode Island personal, corporate, or other types of tax returns in the prior year are required to file Rhode Island tax returns electronically in the current year. To indicate that the firm is not subject to the mandate, select Setup > 1120 Corporation > Rhode Island > Other Return Options and mark the Preparer is not subject to electronic filing mandate (less than 100 returns) checkbox. This clears the critical diagnostic message that is generated when electronic filing for Rhode Island is not selected.

Returns supported for electronic filing

You can electronically file the following return types:

Rhode Island only processes one year of tax returns at a time. Only 2022 returns will be processed during the 2023 processing season.

Returns not supported for electronic filing

You cannot electronically file the following return types:

Signature requirements for electronic filing

Rhode Island does not have a specific signature form for electronic filing. Rhode Island requires that you include the date the authorized officer signs the return in the electronic file. Enter the signature date on Screen RIELF, or leave blank if it matches the federal date you enter on federal Screen ELF.

Resubmitting returns

If you need to make a change to a return that you have already electronically filed, and Rhode Island has already accepted it, you must amend the return.

If Rhode Island rejects the return, you may make the changes, correct the rejection and resubmit. if you can re-transmit electronically, you must file by the return due date or 3 calendar days after you initially received the rejected acknowledgement, whichever is later.

Attachments

Rhode Island requires a valid federal attachment in the electronic file. Therefore, if the federal return is not supported for electronic filing by the IRS, you cannot e-file the state return. See 1120-US: Forms that are not eligible for electronic filing for a detailed list.

Rhode Island allows PDF attachments in the electronic file. The state prefers that you name attachments according to the form name and year. For example, you would name the Historic Preservation Investment Tax Credit form "Credit 286B2022.pdf". Rhode Island will not reject returns with attachments that do not conform to this naming convention.

If the NOL Carryover Worksheet, General Footnote, Elections, and/or Required Statements are calculating in the return, they will automatically attach as PDFs to the electronic file.

Payment methods

You can make payments by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or check for balance due returns, extensions and estimates.
